"I, Sir, I was born in Elizondo,
in the Valley of Baztan. My name is Don José Lizarrabengoa. You
know my land well enough to guess from my surname that I am Basque of origin
and blood, and an old christian. If I write the "don" before my name is
not due to vanity or whim, but for the right of a well-proven nobility.
In my house of Elizondo you could revise the title deeds of my line"

Meaning. Unknown Linguistic commentary: Julio Caro Baroja considers it enigmatic and considers fantastic and romantic etimologies as "all in one" to express solidarity. He also compares the name to a toponimic name in Petilla and Bastán in the Higher Pyrenees. Luis Michelena quotes Amado Alonso who demonstrated that from Baztan came Baçan, the same as from Estuñiga came Zuñiga. (Mikel Belasko (1996): Diccionario etimológico de los nombres de los pueblos, villas y ciudades de Navarra, Pamplona, Ed. Pamiela, págs. 171 y 125)
